The New Touhou Character Alternate Interpretation Compendium!

Can we rename the tiers? The naming scheme is inconsistent. It starts out with EX and Endgame which seem to imply the stages of a game and then drops down to youkai and fairy, which are fantasy-creature classifications. Youkai are less than EX now? I thought youkai were EX, in that most EX bosses are youkai? This is bugging me a lot.

While you could go for the stage theme all the way down, might I suggest using SA's Fairy-Kappa-Tengu-Oni God classifications?

Point is: the "fairy" tier is weirdly broad. Alongside the fairies and Watatsukis, you have Tokiko, who doesn't have a real name, and Lily White, who doesn't have any dialogue, and neither of them can leech any popularity off the other characters they're associated with like bloody Daiyousei and bloody Koakuma.

I also forget what the point of the tiering system was to begin with, which is part of it. I think it was so we could alternate between more and less popular characters, but now we seem to be using a purely voting-based system, and then why is it subdivided into four tiers, and it all makes my neatness-craving video game-playing brain hurt.

I can't believe I'm doing this, but I'm just am gonna go ahead and Text Dump some stuff I just came up with;

Alice Margatroid ~ The Doll of Shinki, the Magician of the Rainbow

Alice had done it again. She had stayed up all night, fine-tuning her spell circles, checking each and every tiny detail, every stroke of every character in every line. This is it, she thought, this is the spell that will bring life to the unliving, this will turn Shanghai, her first doll, her mother's doll, into as much of a person as she was!

Alice began the recitation, and had stumbled upon a rather hard to pronounce line, when a knock on the door came. Alice cared little; she was making the greatest magical breakthrough in the history of spellcasting!

And then the door burst open; A black-white blur sped in, and suddenly, Shanghai was on the other side of the room, and the chalk outline of the circle looked much more like an oval, dust scattered in the air. Alice sighed. This AGAIN? She turned towards her sudden, unexpected visitor, and glared. That was a solid days worth of work gone, and while it was nice to have a friendly neighbor, there was a time and place. Still, as distanced as she was from her upbringing, she responded with grace and refinement, letting the human witch explain herself.

"I heard from the ice fairy that you hadn't been seen out and around for a while. I kinda blew her off (and blew her away), but I got to thinkin', I mean, you don't leave much anyway, but you were gone for a whole week, and you're my neighbor, so I had ta look out for ya, ze."

Alice kept calm, and then realized, as brash and rude as she could be, the witch was pretty good at keeping up with those she cared about. Besides, she hadn't done something irevocable, like steal... the... book... she... ... Alice felt that a long talk was in order. She dusted off Shanghai, and got the Little Legion at the ready. Things could get dicey.

That's the plan. One or two at a time. I'll do one write-up per post after the refresher, but right now, I got a lot of catching up to do.

It's divided into four tiers because otherwise the categories would be even broader and it'd be even harder to know where to draw the line between people you're putting on the same level as Marisa, and people you're putting on the same level as Lily White.

And we did mostly stick to an alternating scheme through the thread...

Hmm, interesting.

You know, I'm just reminded again of how much the idea of what a write-up should be has shifted. Or has it always been like this? You know, at the beginning of the thread, it was like, let's explain how we see the characters. And the further the thread progressed, the more write-ups turned into little creative writing exercises, cute little pieces of fanfiction like this one.

It's an interesting shift, and I can see where it came from. I just also feel that it's raised expectations too much and made people hesitant to write anything unless they feel like writing a great work of art.*

It's also just fine to do like Clarste and just describe in a concise but effective way what you think is important about the character.

Satori is a satori. Satori are well known for, among other things, being Satori.

I will eat your beard.

Smiling is communication. You don't smile for yourself, you smile for others. You smile to let those around you know that you're okay, that you're happy, that you're satisfied with yourself. You might smile while alone out of reflex, but with no one to see it does it have any meaning? Satori is alone, yet she smiles.

Smiles can lie. Some people have trained to lie for others, some have been taught to lie to themselves. We live in a world that wants you to smile all the time, so other people won't be burdened by your suffering. Satori is not a liar. Her neutral face is indeed neutral, tinged with a hint of resignation at the inevitability of the patterns she's recognized in her life. Satori is not a liar, yet she smiles.

Honestly, she doesn't have much reason to smile, before the events of SA at least. She's been self-exiled from society, her sister has closed her third eye and floated away, and even her pets have been avoiding her recently for reasons she'll learn later. And of course by the time we see her her home is being invaded by belligerent kleptomaniacs. Satori isn't exactly the kind of youkai to be excited by a chance to fight with danmaku. The whole situation is tiresome, at best. Yet she smiles.

The third eye can see into the hearts of others. But what is an honest smile other than a window into someone's heart? Satori is a girl who can read hearts and does so out loud, much to the chagrin of others. However, that goes both ways. Satori is a girl who can smile. And that's good enough for me.

That was nice! It made me, uh, you know.

Well, good, because it was really hard to write. I had 3-4 false starts (not counting the time my cat stepped on the keyboard and wrote her own post) and had to replay SA for research.

... You know, when I told you to start doing it again, I really just meant to give you a good-humored push to consider starting again in the future, not to bully you into doing it right the frig now! Forcing these things is painful, hence why my Alice write-up has been sitting in another tab not even half-finished for ages now.

I'm also very curious to know what your cat thinks of Satori.

Welp, as for titling things, I'm not entirely sure how to add stuff like titles and paragraphs to my posts. Much embarrassment. PS: regarding Alice, perhaps she was a human in her first battle, but turned herself into a youkai between Stage 3 and the Extra Stage? It'd explain her boost in power.
