That "Place Relative On Throne" option could be handy for a succession crisis. Your own dynasty being on the throne can let you claim the throne.

And after reading the Reddit thread on it, I have no idea that annex and releasing vassal of different religion group would give them your religion immediately...I still think you have to at least convert the would-be capital to your religion first...or is it?

Can someone tell me how Art of War changes the game? I mean, I know there's a list of its features but I'd like a player's perspective.

So, I decided to get Crusader Kings 2 solely for the Game Of Thrones mod. So far the most "real" success I've had is becoming Hand of the King as Littlefinger after starting at the moment Jon Arryn died (i.e. the start of the show), managing to somehow have two of my men kidnap Robert Baratheon, execute him since I felt that would get me into the graces of Tywin Lannister (and mostly because, well, I could), and I fractured the realm in the process. In some strange twist of fate, Stannis is fighting with Joffrey (which I suppose makes sense), Sansa's under the tutelage of Barristan Selmy, and Arya's being taught by Roose Bolton, which worries me.

One thing I'm not good at is warring. What's the best way to wage war? And is there anything fleets can do besides move troops?

Fleets move troops, that's it. As a bit player like Littlefinger your best bet is to get a bigger title (and more troops) or a big ally with a lot of troops. Numbers win the day in this game most of the time, though the skills and traits of your commanders matter as well. And in the Go T mod there aren't enough merc companies for a rich little guy to just spam, unless you manager to get the Golden Company behind you.

There's plenty of sellsword companies named in the books, though. The Company of the Cat, Long Lances, Brave Companions...

So are naval battles not a thing in CKII?

No naval battles or blockades, no.

There are sellsword companies but they give hundreds of troops each, not the thousand man bands that run around in the vanilla game. Useful for petty lords fighting similar sized targets but less so if you are dealing with a big High Lord and probably useless if dealing with a King/Lord Paramount.

So do you fight wars just with other kingdoms, or are you able to also war with other nobles from the same country?

[up]Internal wars are possible, yes. It depends on the realm law, so some kingdoms might be so centralized that internal wars are not allowed. This is usually not the case in the beginning of the game where vassals war each other all the time. Part of your job is to try to prevent your vassals from infighting too much.

Alright then. Good thing I don't plan on being a king at first, then.

To clarify, I was asking about war in regards to the other people I've played - specifically, the Greyjoys.

Also there's something kind of awesome in managing to take Gregor fuckin' Clegane prisoner on the battlefield.

Is it possible in the GOT mod to make a Kingsguard of your own if you become a king?

It's restricted to the monarch of the Iron Throne (who, if you've noticed, is technically an emperor in the game engine).

For fun, you can appoint a female Kingsguard. It gives you an opinion penalty from your vassals, though.

Other rulers can give out the Bodyguard honorary title for a lesser effect.

[up][up] Indeed, though you more-or-less go "bring me the best knights in the land!" and then you pick who you want on the Kingsguard from a list. So you do get to choose... though they won't necessarily say yes, as I found out when I tried to appoint Oberyn Martell to my Kingsguard. He said no because he could never go without feeling the touch of a woman again. I don't know why, but such a canonical response pleases me.

CK 2 is getting forts that you can build in your counties as well as occupied ones to provide extra defense and supply. They are also making explicit regions to prevent cultural weirdness if you expand too much.

Occupied enemy provinces. I suppose it would help you slow down their sieges when they try to retake those areas.

Forts in occupied enemy territory? I'm sure you have to man those forts with warriors from your levies, or else they grow over time like your castle garrisons.
