One can understand the other if that's what you're asking. There's significant cultural and slang differences otherwise.
It's mostly a difference of accent. Besides, in Montreal you really don't /need/ French.

Your set. Its the same language give or take, and you seem to know English, so you corvered. From an anglo-canadian POV, a lot of the Quebecios swear words invovle find things you find in a church. Make of that what you will.

Whoa whoa whoa. Tabernak, tabernoche tabernouche, yes, but tabernaque is for the actual item alone. All the swear words are bastardizations of the original spelling.

Well I didn't mean to actually swear.
Like people already said, aside from slang/swearing there isn't a huge difference. Some things are different, the Quebecois use some "outdated" terms, but those aren't too likely to pop up and they will understand the more modern term you'll end up using.
Ok, still a while off, but in 2013 I would like to/ am planning to go to Montreal for the World Scout Moot. As a precaution/ General interest, I would like to learn French. Not fluently, but enough to survive. Before I start though I was wondering (And there doesn't seem to be a way of saying this without sounding stupid), is there a drastic difference between the French spoken in France, and the French spoken in Canada? I know languages can vary by region in terms of accent and slang, but are there any major differences in the core language, if any?
