My strategy for speedrunning level 8 was to find a way to get from world 8 to world 1 in 4 consecutive sections. 1:41:80, by the way. I'm not sure what the best route is, and how that time compares to other attempts.

Sakamoto demands an explanation for this shit.Which reminds me, I have Cocoron for Virtual NES (both Japanese and English versions) so I am wondering if I should run a play through and trope it for an article.
It's been a while since I last did it so I don't remember most of the tropes.
Do that, please.

So, does anyoe got an idea what World X-8 looks like in HD? Because I'm desperate.
Yep, I'm still here.I thought that the transparent enemies were just enemies who were not present in the layer you're in right now but will be present if you ever to another layer, thus making some more dangerous than others. They all regenerated.
Your funny quote here! (Maybe)Huh, I wondered if that might have been the case, but I thought I always saw the transparent enemies stay transparent when the world randomly changed in World 8. See, that's why it was a good idea to change it, since it was confusing and not very scary.
I doubt I can record videos of this game on my computer, so I'll try to describe the new World 8 route that I've heard about and tried as best as I can:
In terms of layers' sections it goes 8, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 1. Don't evert at the first opportunity; go to the second section of layer 8, and then evert twice. (Drop down through the bricks and evert to 7 on the big stair, then bounce into the big U to evert to 6 where you can escape as the rocks no longer block you.) Next you'll be in the section of layer 6 with all the thorns—much better than the other section, where you'd have to backtrack/repeat after breaking bricks to make use of eversion. See, there's an eversion point in the middle of the third thorn pit, so it's a leap of faith to get to layer 5. Layer 5's next section is the easy one, where you can get to layer 4 by hopping at the one hole without a blob in it. There is an eversion point to layer 3 here too, but you have to do a trick jump up to the weeds when an enemy just happens to end up on the edge in layer 4. It's not really worth it, since the next layer 3 section is that tricky maze that will slow you down.
By staying in layer 4, you get that easy room where you just jump at the one block without an enemy on it to get to layer 3. Now, the next room has 2 eversion points, and though the point to get to 1 is to the left of the point to 2, this bit of backtracking is well worth it, as not only do you save a whole area in layer 2, but you save going through that "extended decoration area" in layer 1 by traveling through an even number of sections before it. However, failing in this section seems to add enemies to it on further replays. I think what happens is, the entire level is in operation of no matter where you are, so while you were in layers 4+, the goombas already fell through the clouds into the pit. But by starting in layer 3, the goombas are reset to walking on the clouds until you evert down to layer 1, so you'll have to wait for that first one to fall in before you proceed, and one of them might land on the third platform by chance. So I think it's better if you finish this area flawlessly on your first try, but either way, you're at the end!
If you need any more help figuring the game out, or you just want to make sure you didn't miss any eversion points, you could try out the level editor: http://fastcall22.blogspot.com/2010/03/eversion-level-editor-released.html
Anyone care to explain why I'm getting the bad ending even though I had all 240 gems by the end of World 7-X? For some reason I can't go to World 8.
So. Let's all pause for a moment to smell what the Rock was, is, and forever will be... cooking.—Cave JohnsonDid you do this in the same run as getting all 240 gems? You need to get all 240 and finish the 7-X at least once before you can evert to 7-8.
I finished the level, does that mean I have to do it again?
So. Let's all pause for a moment to smell what the Rock was, is, and forever will be... cooking.—Cave JohnsonOnce you collect all the gems, restart the level. There should be an eversion point at your starting location that takes you to X-8.
Don't take life too seriously. It's only a temporary situation. Thanks!
So. Let's all pause for a moment to smell what the Rock was, is, and forever will be... cooking.—Cave JohnsonRight, I discovered that the gem total at the beginning of the level won't update, and the eversion point to 7-8 won't activate, until you re-enter the level with all 240 gems. You don't need to reach the bad ending; you only need to hit Escape after collecting the last gem and choose world 8 again. See, it's not just having all the gems that gives you the good ending, but completing World 7 in layer 8 and then completing World 8 afterwards, so I can understand how that's confusing. (Older versions of Eversion had an exploit where jumping over the flag would allow the player to touch the second flag offscreen and reach World 8 regardless of the layer or number of gems.)
And for those of you wondering what the final world looks like in HD, Nate Naterson finished Let's Play Eversion HD: http://www.wearethelayabouts.com/fusion/comments.php?fn_id=68
Wouldn't you know it? Somebody already put up a video of the short path through World 8 a week before I described it, as well as a video that shows every section.
Eugh. Don't play this game after reading House of Leaves while listening to NIN's The Downward Spiral... Just don't.

ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.Did anyone notice that Eversion HD had its music redone for layer 8? The ending also looks different with the face-block eyes all at different angles and a backdrop that's actually in front of the big eye. (So what, is it in the sky?) I wish Nate Naterson had shown off the time attack mode in world 7 so we could see how the layer 8 gems and face blocks changed.
Recently, I got the idea to download M P3s of music from the NES game Little Samson and substitute them for Eversion's music files. It worked pretty well, since the game has a similarly wide variety in musical moods. But I'm not sure how to go about recording it if I want to show off the results online.
Huh, and now something strange has happened: Up until today, Eversion had a small problem on my computer where sound effects would get cut off to a fraction of a second long after the first time hearing them. But now the sounds always play for the proper length. I didn't change anything in the setup today, but I did get a Windows Automatic Update, so maybe that fixed something the game's sound relied on. And now I'm getting another Update that needs to restart again, already?!?
I love this game so~ I sort of wished I hadn't read about all the surprises beforehand though.
(Still screamed when the first hand appeared though.)
Just a note: if you start getting freaked out, mute the game and play songs from musicals in the background. Turns the game into a ball of narm charm.
(The Nameless Monster) ~Chomp, chomp, munch, munch, gobble, gobble, gulp~I found out the game existed via its Darth Wiki page. I wonder if that ruined some of the impact for me. Or maybe I'm just hard to scare?
Still jumped at the first hand though. And playing the HD version now, still jumped at the first wall of doom. Go figure.

Why did they take out the Cocoron music in more recent versions, as I've heard (but not played myself)?
