So English use the pluralized form? Huh.
Yeah, that makes sense. See, there was a fair bit of German immigration in southern Chile, and in some parts it's gotten so ingrained that we call pies kuchen (though I'm pretty sure it was with the umlaut). Except lemon pie, for some reason.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.I too have known German people who used "kuchen" to mean baked pastries and deserts in general (even though there are other words for that sort of thing). It's not unheard of or anything.

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Apparently we blended it with the Dutch "keuken".
English doesn't just nick words whole. It also goes Dr. Frankenstein on them occasionally.
Some of the comments on Dan's Tumblr sound like they were actually written by Rich.

I'll be honest, there's a lot less of this sort of thing than I expected. And some unrelated other gems.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Literally the usual "men's rights" woe-is-me bullcrap. Bleagh, I'll pass on more, thanks very much. The strawmen in the last few strips were unpleasant enough; the real thing makes mah skin crawl.

Yeah, that avatar's a 'Shop of my real face. That second one makes a decent point but there are a lot of comments complaining about movies where it just flat out didn't happen. I mean, Pacific Rim and GOTG? In what fucking universe are a veteran mecha pilot and a space pirate "average Joes"?
Is it a strawman if the argument is not being misinterpreted but, instead, being taken straight from the original?
It isn't, unless you are conflating it with another real argument.
Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask.Stereotypes start somewhere.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.No. A strawman isn't just a word for a weak argument. To be a strawman, it has to be a misrepresentation. Even a good argument can be a strongman if it's being used to knock an even stronger one. So that just wouldn't follow.
What do you mean, I take things too seriously?
Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask.Considering cries of "strawman" is being yelled at completely inappropriate times to complain about legitimate parodies, I find nice some people still take the term seriously.
Incidentally, the question of mine that you answered before wasn't actually a real question. So we clearly on the same track on this question.

Perhaps a better way to put it is this: there are certain arguments that one assumes must be strawmen (and often are indeed strawmen of legitimate positions), but are actually held by some people.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.I like to call those "scarecrows".
I see your point, Ninety. But here I don't think they're being used to knock anyone who isn't them, considering they haven't done anything like identify as some specific group or similar.
I understand disliking them and wanting them to be gone or at least in less focus, but they're not really strawmen? This is semantics, by this point, really. (Not that I mind talking semantics one bit.)
Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask.Something can be badly written and not be a strawman. Shocking. I know.
Read my stories! For what it's worth, I've actually liked these past few pages; I'm rather enjoying seeing Larry's reactions to Rich. It's true that he's backslid before, but that's not implausible, nor does it necessarily imply that he will simply continue to backslide to his status quo. Instead, I'm inclined to suspect that, despite the backsliding, the seed of doubt regarding his perspective was sown, and is now being vigorously mulched and watered.
Either way, I'm interested to see where this goes.
(... I feel that I keep stepping in to defend elements that next to no-one else in this thread likes. For the sake of clarity, please note that I'm not doing this simply to be contrary (I believe); I genuinely enjoyed these pages, and wanted to leave a defending word for them.)
My Games & WritingFor what its worth, recent events have made Larry and Rich a case of Some Anvils need to be dropped. You'd think the timing was deliberate on Shive's part.

Fair point; I misued the term.
I still find Rich and Larry unpleasant to read through. No question they remind me of the real thing—a bit too much—but they're still ham-fistedly annoying.
Yeah, that avatar's a 'Shop of my real face.Indeed. Just because there are, for example, actual people who think of all black people as brainless apes, doesn't mean it wouldn't be annoying to have a racist character constantly saying shit like that.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Granted, finding the Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped balance between Anvilicious and Preaching to the Choir is damned hard to write.

Yeah, that avatar's a 'Shop of my real face.
That would be the plural form.
Küche can also mean the stuff you make in a kitchen as well though.
