I really don't get why you guys like Courtney so much. She's just the stereotypical "annoying kid" archetype.
I mean, I hope she's in more episodes, because her actress was really into it, but the character is... not great.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."She's not just the annoying kid. She's the troublemaker. "Disruptive influence".
I mean, give her basic chemistry and she'll be Nitro 9ing things up in no-time.
Eh... I've dealt with enough of those in real life to not be a fan.
And please. She ain't got nothing on Ace.

"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."Wasn't there a conversation here where it was basically determined that the only reason she has that label is because she's black? Or was that on the Eruditorum tumblr blog?

Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatI mean, she wears the label with pride. And the Doctor approves of it, because in his book disruptive influences are good things to be.
If they had parent night on Gallifrey its not hard to imagine what the Doctor's would have been like.

By that logic, she might wear it to thumb her nose at the people who think it's inappropriate for her to be attending Coal Hill. Do we know if it's a public school in the American or British sense of the word?
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the Great"Your son is a disruptive influence."
"Oh well, toss him in the blender and we'll make another one."
-Doctor hides in a barn for several years-
I dunno. Maybe she'll grow on me in the next episode.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."It would be a much more defensible argument that Courtney is black because she's a disruptive influence. She clearly has a contempt for authority that I'm content to accept that it just hasn't been convenient to show that acting out any further than "go on, do it!"
Fresh-eyed movie blogThe child actor who does Courtney, Ellis George, is really good at the acting thing. She's pretty convincing in the role of a kid that is probably a bit too smart for her social status and the teachers liking and, worst of all, knows it. She's turned her label against those that gave her it, and that's always something the labellers hate.
I don't get how that earns the characterization tag, though. That's just basic [TECH] gibberish. I mean, you don't learn more about Data just because he can say "multi-modal reflection sorting" with a straight face.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatYou at least learn she's able to talk about something complicated without telling us to forget the banana.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWhat Bocaj said.
But bananas are a good source of potassium!
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatYeah, I mean—Moffat has a very, very specific way of writing Techno Babble which he refuses to apply to River. River talks like a proper sci-fi character, while everyone else consistently trips over themselves, even other sciencey people. It's Moffat's way of showing that River is competent and knowledgeable.
We don't learn anything about Data via his Techno Babble abilities because he and every other scientist on Trek talks like River.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Bananas are not only radioactive, they're berries in disguise.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers...dammit, now I'm gonna have "Bananas: Berries in Disguise" to the tune of the old Transformers jingle stuck in my head.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. Not the intended result but I can't say I'm unhappy with it.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersBut only bananas growing where the Sonic Stuff Factory used to be, right?
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatHundreds lose their jobs, economy in turmoil, families in crisis as forced into destitution.
Thanks, the Doctor
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWait.
I know this is the most mundane thing to focus on, but bananas are berries?
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."
Trying to find out if Susan's age was ever mentioned, I have tangentially discovered that, surprisingly, TARDIS Wikia does not have a page for roses as flowers.
I find this surprising because they have a page for friggin' milk but not for the flower that is the namesake of two companions and at least one one-off character.
"We're home, Chewie."
