You say that now, but in a few weeks we'll learn she provided that talisman herself and this is all a massive gambit with herself as the man behind the robot ship in a quest for vengeance against Jack.

[up][up][up]Jenny have been crushing all my expectations, to be honest. She seemed so much like a generic Zimmy look a like with little personality, back in her first appearance. Instead, she shaped to be genuinelly interesting.

Well, Tom is known for playing his audience like a harp.

[up]Nope: there's percussion involved. Harpsichord. wink

[up][up][up] You know, looking back at that page, I'd argue that there was something to her even then. Most people don't introduce themselves with "Why, helloooo."

At least, no one I know.

[up]Well, yeah, that introduction was why I had low expectations in the first place.tongue Though I did notice back then that her speech clashed with her appearance (and it still does).

Some discussion in other boards—and I think it was mentioned in this thread—is that she has a West Country accent, albeit somewhat archaic.

[up]Which, according to Wikipedia, means she sounds like a piratenote . Huh. That was definitively not the kind of accent I was imagining. That is what I get for applying American logic to British people.

(specifically, I thought her long words sounded valley girl-ish)

From what was discussed, "my love" as a casual, friendly term of endearment is a colloquialism more often used among older women and is relatively rare among the younger generations, although some still slip into common use from time to time.

EDIT: Also this is Annie's own accent (Yorkshire). Voice clip was taken from an interview with Kate Rusby, whose songs have partly inspired the comic and who Tom has said Annie and Surma are supposed to sound like.

[up]It really depends on where you are. There are parts of Nottinghamshire where you'll get "loved", "petted" and "me ducked". Every other sentence sometimes, too. tongue

And now you're telling me Jenny talks like a pirate and is therefore destined to acquire a peg leg and an eyepatch? Future villain status confirmed.

Ah, Jenny seems to have a gift for understatement.

(Also, relevant to the current thread of conversation?)

@pulpfreebookworm: Jenny is "kind of weird"? In comparison to who? The part fire elemental psychopomp in training? The adolescent Gadgeteer Genius? The girl who's basically a living portal to a dark dimension?

Well, she's a teenage witch who apparently sounds like a pirate and is pretty unfazed by all of those things you mentioned so far, and also seems to be having a relationship with a guy who still hasn't completely gotten over being possessed by a magical spider thing and is obsessed with another woman.

She's weird in comparison to lots of things, I think.

I think one of my favorite things about Gunnerkrigg Court is that side characters are not weak or op (except Jones. Jones is op). If they don't appear for awhile it's just that the court is very large and complicated, but everyone had a unique ability or skillset that puts them on par or close to the protagonists.

For all you know the Hulk trying that with Jones would just result in broken Hulk toe bones.

Jones' weight is roughly "hella"

Also I was indicating the technique, not the user.

If you really want to stop Jones, put an impassible chasm between yourself and her, with only a rickety wooden bridge spanning it.

Well, there's no real way to permanently stop her. Best you can do is slow her down enough that you die of old age before she gets to you.

She's like the Juggernaut, except the Juggernaut has a big metal suit to look intimidating, while Jones would probably look intimidating wearing a clown outfit.
