Sasuke literally calls him perfect at one point.

Sasuke isn't exactly a bastion of sanity himself ya know.

Of course he thinks a crazy guy like Itachi is perfect, he's crazy too.

x2 Itachi thinks that, but no one shown thinks otherwise. Lets not forget the Kages themselves said he had the mentality of a Hokage as a child.

Of course Itachi would think he's imperfect, being humble is part of his perfection.

Itachi was a genius but he was broken man on the inside. The poor guy had tough life.

Must be really tough being a prodigy born into the most powerful clan in the village...it was tough because his fellow Uchiha kind of screwed everything up for him.

He has PTSD and a hero complex. He admitted that his tragic flaw was trying to do everything by himself, and when you think you have to do everything by yourself, you start ignoring anything that tells you you can't. He was already traumatized by seeing war up close at age 4, and then once he started failing to achieve his objectives, it made him more and more desperate. A stabler man would have demanded the position of Hokage in Itachi's situation, rather than killing his entire clan, including people he knew to be innocent, or allowing the coup to go forward. Make both sides an offer they can't refuse.

I'm pretty sure Sakura and Naruto care what Sasuke thinks.

Like, literally the second half is almost entirely launched by them caring too much about what Sasuke thinks instead of just letting him avenge his HONOR and kill a wanted, genocidal murderer. Because killing and avenging one's family is a crime punishable by death in anachronistic feudal Japan.

What? Are you really suggesting he should have tried to ask for the place of Hokage? In front of Danzo? At his age? With his feats? While bearing the last name of the people who the higher ranks believe is starting a couple? Sorry, but that would be even more insane.

More like, "if you joined ISIS, did nothing to stop any of their crimes, until one day you decided wipe out the entire organization."

Sasuke is a missing-nin who joined up with the guy who killed the village's leader and then killed that guy. I'm not assuming that Sasuke went with Orochimaru and participated in baby-eating vampire rituals because we never see that; Sasuke even refuses to kill people like Orochimaru wants him to.

By the time the Leaf found out Sasuke wasn't with Orochimaru anymore, Sasuke was after another mass-murderer from the Leaf, and as far as they know actually succeeded in killing him. Up until this point Sasuke's only crime is refusing to be their military asset - his genuine crimes don't start until he goes after Killer Bee and attacks the Kage Summit.

And you think Danzo is going to let this down? The council wouldn't support him because he's an Uchiha, the people they believe are starting a coup. The only logical way is to straight up go to Sarutobi and report Danzo to him. And he never did this because of reasons unknown. Saying I want to be hokage in front of Danzo or the council is like an FBI agent trying to convince the Parliament and his own boss to make him the president, as well as exposing the entire ANBU's secrets because literally any crime of Danzo he would know of would be from what he ordered the ANBU to do. Nobody would accept him as leader, especially none of the big families or the people who suspect the Uchiha as the one behind the Kyuubi attack.

Because there is going to be load of evidence that Sasuke did not participate in any of Orochimaru's activities available for the village leaders? Naruto and Sakura are supposed to be glad that he's staying 24/7 for two years next to the guy who said that he wants the Sharingan? Even if he didn't do anything morally wrong under Orochimaru, he is still considered a soldier who left his post and joined a terrorist organization, thus a fugitive.

And then dismantled that terrorist organization.

They still need to acknowledge that a Navy SEAL went AWOL, joined ISIS, and then killed the leader.

Naruto and Sakura don't have to be glad that he stayed with Orochimaru, but they should acknowledge that he left and took the guy out without any apparent help, and consider that during his trial.

This world isn't operating on a moral system where child soldiers, slavery (the Hyuga), and revenge/acting against protocol are grave offenses (look at Shikamaru/Neji for the first, and Naruto for the second).
