• Ho Yay: Rachel and Dorcas. The hugging and kissing might just be a normal Victorian Pseudo-Romantic Friendship. But then there's Dorcas suggesting they should run away and live together in a Welsh cottage, and Rachel's delighted reaction. And then Rachel turns down repeated proposals from Lord Chelfont — the first time, we're led to think it's because of her guilty secret, but by the end of the book that's resolved and she still won't marry him. At the end of the book Rachel and Dorcas head off to tour Europe together, and in the last paragraph de Cresseron glimpses them together in Venice, gliding around in a boat by moonlight.
