YMMV / Wolverine (1982)

• Harsher in Hindsight: The Japan Air Lines flight that Wolverine takes to get to Tokyo is called JAL 007. One year later, a real-life Korean Air Lines flight, Flight KAL 007, was shot down by a Soviet fighter, killing all aboard, while flying the exact same route (outside of a disputed drifting over the Kamchatka Peninsula that triggered the shootdown) that the fictional JAL 007 took in the story.
• Les Yay: Storm and Yukio’s relationship has been the cause for much discussion since their first meeting, which took place in this story. Seeing as Yukio treats Storm much like she treats Logan (who she explicitly states her love for in the miniseries) it’s no wonder why fans have been shipping the two women for decades.
• Tough Act to Follow: Aside from the Weapon X story that would come out years later there is possibly no more iconic Wolverine story than this one. Several elements (Logan’s duel with his own honor, his tortured love life, his choice to embrace his role as a wandering Rōnin or allow others into his life) had existed in previous stories but not to this level or as well executed. “Logan in Japan” has been a well returned to many times with no author or artist combination managing to tell as effective a narrative.
• Wangst: Kitty’s reaction to Storm’s Mohawk and punk outfit. For the amount of crying and wailing she expresses at her friend getting a makeover you would think Storm had put down Lockheed or something. A bit justified in that she is still a fourteen-year-old girl, and was not solely reacting to Storm's haircut and wardrobe change but also to the changes in Storm's character which had been building up since the Brood Arc that this outward change underscored. When Kitty confronted Storm she had recently discovered that Storm had gotten rid of her garden, something she had treated maternally beforehand even referring to the plants as her "little ones" and let us not forget Storm's status as a Parental Substitute for Kitty up until this point. Between this, her increasingly ruthless behavior in such fights as her duel with Calisto a few issues earlier, and her sudden, dramatic appearance change, it's no wonder the poor girl was shaken.
