• Angst? What Angst?:
  • Amusingly, this is pretty much how the rest of Beau's companions act when they saw his dead body. They just continued with their own activities like as if nothing major happened.
  • Harley. Be it the delight from the profits or his own insensitivity, he doesn't seem to do much to protect Tara when she was subjected to bullying from outsiders, other than expressing his sympathy early in the film. His unstated angst was only evident when he had to abandon Tara so that he and the rest of the freak-show crew can move on to another town.
• Anvilicious: So heavy-handed your head will probably feel it at the end of the movie.
  • Your physical appearance does not define your true self. There's more than meets the eye.
  • Be yourself. Changing your looks to meet society's expectations will not make you happy.
• Tear Jerker:
  • Tara's final fate, probably one of the cruelest, non-death endings ever delivered to a movie protagonist who doesn't actually deserve it. Being reduced to a feral human followed by being abandoned for the wild by her family was narrative-poetic but sad to watch. Harley and the freak-show crew was notably gloomy when they were loaded up and ready to leave, with Athena in an inconsolable state as she thrashes about in her room pleading not to abandon Tara.
