- Playing Against Type: While he's certainly played a number of character types, Joe Pesci was usually pigeonholed to playing gangsters, mafiosos and crooks, even winning the Best Supporting Actor oscar for Goodfellas. Here, he plays a wordly if, at times, crass and incredibly wise homeless man who changes the life of an initially snobby Ivy student.
- Tear Jerker
- Simon running out of the van after meeting and being rejected by his son. He falls down in a pile of leaves to die, imitating an earlier story about dying dog. Monty picks him up, telling him he is not a dog and showing him that there are still people who love him.
- The funeral scene and eulogy.
- The scene in the library when Simon is looking at how dirty he is and asks for a bath is pretty damn sad. Especially with how embarrassed he looks at having to ask it.
