- Cliché Storm: Probably the film's biggest weakness. Apart from being set in an unusual house, it does little to distinguish itself from other films of its genre: a child newly arrived at a haunted house is particularly targeted, the one person who knows everything that's going on is initially dismissed as crazy, there's a skeptical outsider who is proven wrong, there's a ghost more powerful and malevolent than any before it threatening everyone, and so on.
- Memetic Mutation: Jokes about having Sam and Dean Winchester in the film have popped up on the comments sections of the film's trailers.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The film briefly toys with the idea that the hauntings could just be the result of an overactive imagination stemming from grief and guilt (and in Eric's case, exacerbated by his laudanum addiction), setting up a more ambigious, psychological approach to the story. However, the film instead quickly dismisses this ambiguity and makes it clear the hauntings have a genuine supernatural cause (thus turning it into a rather generic supernatural horror film).
