• Base-Breaking Character: Tati. Some readers appreciate her faith in Sorrow and True Love, however others find her to be a Damsel Scrappy compared to her more capable sisters. Despite being the oldest, her pining over Sorrow leaves Jena to deal with Cezar and look after the family single-handedly - even when Jena is suffering equal heartbreak over seemingly losing Gogu/Costi. The little initiative Tati does take only makes things worse, including giving away most of the household savings and running off to meet the Night People. Then she almost loses her chance to be with Sorrow because she wasted away refusing to eat while he completed the almost-impossible quest to allow them to be together, forcing the other characters to fix things.
• Moral Event Horizon: Cezar crosses this when he tortures and kills the innocent dwarf, Anatolie. Though it is arguable that he crossed it earlier then this for using his brother, Costi, as his gift.
• Tear Jerker: Tati going to live in the Other Kingdom to be with Sorrow but having to leave her sisters behind.
