  • Audience-Alienating Premise: A Student/Teacher Romance between a married woman in her late thirties and a 16-year-old boy is a pretty tough sell, to say the least.

  • Diagnosed by the Audience: The ending implies that Ling has some form of seasonal affective depression, as she smiles for the first time at the sight of a clear sky above her Malaysian home village despite the utterly devastating chain of events that just befell her.

  • Esoteric Happy Ending: Ling cuts off contact with Wei Lun, divorces her husband, sinking her chances of getting a Singaporean permanent residency for time being and is possibly with an unwanted pregnancy… but the sun shines on her as she arrives in her home village on an enforced break, symbolising a new beginning for her and drawing a genuine smile out of her.
