  • Anvilicious: Likely because of the miniseries' short length, David Simon just comes right out and has characters lecture each other about the points he wants to get across. This is particularly prevalent in scenes with Steele.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Treat Williams has two scenes as Brian Grabler, a retired cop who talks at length and in detail about how the war on drugs, the militarization of police and "tough on crime" rhetoric from politicians has not helped anyone and has seriously damaged the public's trust in law enforcement and says the war was lost years ago, even if no one wants to admit it, and steals the series when he's on screen, perfectly nailing the theme of the series and turning what could have been just exposition or a lecture into a compelling scene.
  • Signature Scene: A few.
    • The opening scene where Jenkins talks about effective policing and being a decent cop to a group of new police recruits, intercut with ominous scenes of increasingly brutal police arrests. Then it's revisited at the end except this time, the police recruits are various people Jenkins worked with and who helped him (such as Hersl, Gondo, and Rayam but also including some of the apparently more innocent parties like Davis and Suiter), perfectly expressing the show's anti-police Central Theme.
    • The death of Sean Suiter. Due to the mysterious nature of the death and how tense the entire part leading up to it is, it has been noted as one of the most memorable scenes in the show.
  • Special Effect Failure: When Erika Jensen is purportedly playing the flute, her actress Dagmara DomiƄczyk doesn't really move her fingers, making it very obvious that the music is just dubbed over.
