• Accidental Aesop: Don't spank your children as punishment. When Heather was three, she was playing with the stove and it started a fire. She heard her mother calling her, but didn't answer because she thought she was going to be spanked for touching the stove, and her mother ended up dying in the fire.
• Jerkass Woobie: Heather is a malicious little brat who is doing everything she can to break up the family and have her father back to herself again. She's also been carrying the guilt for four years of having accidentally killed her mother in the house fire, unable to talk to her father about it because she's terrified he'll hate her, and he won't take her to a therapist because he thinks all they do is mess up your brain.
• The Woobie: Molly and Michael lost their father, have to move away from all their friends, and have to live with a younger stepsister who hates them and does everything she can to get them in trouble (in spite of Molly's attempts to bond with her) and a stepfather who dislikes them and thinks they're bullying his precious little girl because she always accuses them of being mean to her.
