• The Woobie:
  • Adrien. According to his backstory, his mother abandoned him and his father died when he was only four, leaving him to be raised in state care. As a result, he has trouble relating to people and suffers from anxiety and insomnia. The night he proposes to his girlfriend, he is attacked (unknowingly by the guy she’d been seeing on the side) and struck by a car. He’s only saved when Latimer turns him into a vampire and subsequently cannot go home or see Jenna again, and has to feed on human blood. One night, he goes to see Jenna in secret and witnesses her being struck by the same man who caused his accident. When he tries to protect her, he is overwhelmed by the smell of her blood and kills her. Upon realising what he did, he briefly snaps and goes on a rampage. Later, he is given a letter from his girlfriend, which reveals that she’d initially been using him for his money, cheating on him and was planning on leaving him out of guilt before he proposed. And even then, he states that he’d still “give anything to have her back”.
  • Latimer. He and his wife defied their families and strict social conventions to be together, only to inadvertently set off a war. They’re forced to flee town with their son. Then, Latimer can only watch helplessly as his wife is murdered, whilst he’s made into a vampire against his will, believing his son to be dead as well. Years later, he happens across a young man whilst he’s starving and unthinkingly kills him despite feeling an odd connection to him. He then realises afterwards that this man is actually is adult son, who himself has a family. Latimer is so distraught, he spends centuries watching over his son’s descendants and protecting them to atone. And after all that, his evil maker still comes back to torment him and he and his coven – the closest thing he has to a family – are threatened by another coven.
