  • Angst? What Angst?: There are several instances of Laurie being taken hostage and/or nearly killed by the villains throughout the series, but after the danger has passed she quickly recovers and rarely mentions these incidents again. Oddly, Laurie does display some understandable angst and trauma regarding her husband being murdered and his killer threatening to come after her and her son, with Leo even pointing out she might have some undiagnosed PTSD from it, but she never consciously dwells upon all the other near-death experiences she's gone through.
  • Continuity Lock-Out: The central mysteries of each novel are standalone stories, with the plots being fully explained and wrapped-up in a single installment, so it's not strictly necessary to read the books in order in that regard. However, if you're invested in the regular cast and especially the development of Laurie and Alex's romance, things generally make more sense if you start at the beginning and read the books in publication order. As well as giving the reader a better grasp of who the main characters are, the references to previous novels also make more sense.
