• Fair for Its Day: Tony Hillerman was white and didn't move to New Mexico until adulthood. He often has Navajo characters speak about what is and isn't true to their culture and his books could, at least at first, be considered examples of The Exotic Detective. However, Hillerman's work is generally considered to have been respectful and well-researched, not to mention influential, and features lots of different nuanced and compelling Native American characters. The Navajo Tribal Council awarded him a Special Friend of the Dineh award for his work.
