  • Graziano attacking Pierini to defend Pietro is very satisfying. It's also the only time Pierini ever gets anything similar to a comeuppance.
  • Towards the end, Pietro beating up Ronca (Pierini's insufferable sidekick) is very much Took a Level in Badass.
• Jerkass Woobie: Graziano may be a shallow womanizer who keeps making bad choice, but he genuinely falls in love with Erica, who turns out to be the worst bastard girlfriend ever. That said, he loses some sympathy because he's the one who brings misfortune on himself and forgives Erica every time.
• The Woobie:
  • Pietro is a shy and nice kid who has to put up with horrifying bullying and abuse at school, at home, and even when he's walking on the street. He's also a hard-working student who ends up being unfairly Held Back in School for something that wasn't even his fault.
  • Flora is a kindhearted and lonely woman who is avoided by everyone, was molested by her uncle as a teenager, has been taking care of her ill mother for ten years, has to deal with a terrifying student like Pierini, and is eventually abandoned by the only man who has ever loved her. After her Sanity Slippage, she falls more into Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds.
