• Harsher in Hindsight: Watching this when knowing that Sarah Rowland Doroff's real mother passed away in 1995 (when she still a child)...
• Jerkass Woobie: Lucas has just emerged from a 5 year jail sentence and is determined to go straight but no-one believes he can do that and ends up having to run away to Canada with Ned and Meg just to avoid going back to prison.
• Moe: Meg, a 6 year-old Cute Mute, who's spent the last two years mourning for her deceased mother.
• Tear Jerker: Meg's backstory is sad enough as it is and she looks sad for most of her screen time but the only time we actually see her cry is when Lucas tries to leave.
• The Woobie: Meg, she hasn't spoken since her mother died 2 years earlier.
  • Ned, he is out of work, a widower, about to lose his home and trying to gain custody of his daughter and pay for her treatment, he robs a bank, breaks into Meg's boarding school to retrieve her (twice), is beaten up and locked in a cellar by Charlie and his thugs, hit by a police vehicle while trying to catch Meg, leaves his ill-gotten money at Doctor Horvath's, sleeps rough in a fishing net and has to dress in drag just to escape to Canada.
