YMMV / Thomas And Friends S 1 E 19 The Flying Kipper

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The Triumphant Reprise of Henry's theme as he pulls the Flying Kipper. It seems to be a fan favourite with many variations on YouTube.
  • Fridge Horror: While the narrator says "they got out just in time" after the driver said "Come on fireman, back to our engine", nothing is said about the guard's fate (whose post is in the brake van), although it's likely he escorted both men back to their engine as he's seen getting up with the driver.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Henry returns from crewe with his new shape and the people welcome him home with cheers. Lots of little children make themselves late for school, because they want to see him pulling the Express.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Henry's crash scene is already unnerving to watch in itself, but additionally, this is one of the few accidents in the series where people's lives were put in legitimate danger. In both the book and TV version, three men were drinking cocoa in the brake van that Henry didn't just collide with, but smashed to pieces. The narrator even says that the group got out just in time, meaning that they probably exited the van to see Henry steaming towards them, forcing them to run for their lives. If the guard and driver had not been so devoted to their duty...
  • Special Effect Failure: For some, the spectacle of Henry's crash is ruined a bit when you notice the hand pushing his model. Thankfully, it's easy to miss due to the scene being so darkly lit, but it's still one of the most infamous goofs in the entire series. note
  • Stock Footage Failure: In the two last close-ups of Henry, he is in his old shape. In "Coal", there was a nearly identical close-up of Henry in his new one. From this, it can be judged that the episodes were filmed concurrently and the editors mixed up the footage. In the same shot, a small gap can be seen between Henry's eyes and his face mask and some sticker lining on his cylinder is peeling off.
  • Tear Jerker: Henry having high hopes for pulling the Kipper nicely and being allowed to pull the Express; only to wake up on his side, badly damaged and embedded in the wreckage of the two goods trains. Before the Fat Controller comes over to help, Henry despairingly muses that he's only good for scrap.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Despite the aforementioned little hiccups, however, the rest of the episode is gorgeous to look at. From the dock setting, to the nighttime shots, it’s easily one of the most beautiful-looking episodes of the classic seasons.
