  • Alternative Character Interpretation: When Oscar receives the gift of telepathy, Isabela looks at Alma and she appears horrified. But was Alma actually that upset, or was she just shocked and Isabela interpreted her reaction as more negative than it actually was, because it triggered memories of Mirabel's disastrous gift ceremony? The narration seems to imply that it was more of the latter, since Alma is shown to have a positive view of Oscar's gift after she's had time to process what it is.
  • The Woobie:
    • Mirabel's situation was painful enough in the movie, but she has it even worse in this story. The very first chapter begins with her being exiled from her home and her family by her once-loving grandmother because of a power she has no control over, and she has to live and hide with her uncle Bruno in the walls of the Casita for her entire childhood, adolescence and young adult years.
    • Bruno was deliberately exiled from the Casita by Abuela instead of choosing to leave as he did in the original movie, and then on the day of Mirabel's gift ceremony, Abuela blames him and even hits him when it turns out his niece's gift is the same as his.
