YMMV / The Twilight Zone (1959) S5E33: "The Brain Center at Whipple's"

Go To

  • Informed Wrongness: Whipple mentions that their competitors grew twice as much as they did in the 40 years when his father ran the place and if "they could find a machine they could put in to replace a man, they did it". If Whipple can access the technology to automate the entire factory (and assuming he accurately assessed his competitors' attitudes), his competitors likely can and will end up doing the same. This would force Whipple Manufacturing Company out of business if they didn't automate things. Since the number of people employed by the company (283,000) is must higher than the number Whipple mentioned would lose their job due to automation (61,000), Whipple's approach (though heartless) may be the right thing to do.
  • Strawman Has a Point: While shooting Dickerson was extreme since he wasn't endangering anyone's safety, Whipple is right that he was within his rights since the guy was trespassing and damaging his property. He also gave Dickerson a generous four months notice of his termination.
  • Values Resonance: The central conflict of this episode, needless to say, has become more significant as time has gone by and automation (and various other cost-saving measures like outsourcing) has increased.
