YMMV / The Twilight Zone (1959) S5E31: "The Encounter"

  • Fair for Its Day: While some of the racial elements of the episode are widely seen as problematic by modern standards, it deals with racism, war crimes and vengeance in ways that were impressively ahead of its time for 1964.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Fenton breaks down and admits that his overbearing manner is a cover for being lonely and lost. He swings back and forth between sadly reflecting on the state of his life, and angrily casting the blame outward. He's not a nice guy, but he comes across as pathetic more than malicious.
  • Retroactive Recognition: George Takei, who would begin his rise to fame as Mr. Sulu two years after this episode first aired.
