YMMV / The Twilight Zone (1959) S2E28: "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Ross loves the taste of cigarettes. John Hoyt, the actor who played him, died of lung cancer.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: While the title is a Shout-Out to the quiz show To Tell the Truth, thanks to Parody Displacement, modern-day viewers will be reminded of "Will the Real Slim Shady Please Stand Up?"
  • Magnificent Bastard: Haley the cook at a small roadside diner is far more than he initially appears. Against the hidden Martian going by the name "Ross," Haley allows him to seemingly manipulate the situation to cause the deaths of any witnesses nearby before revealing that Haley had been playing Ross and in fact had been setting up earth for conquest and colonization. Revealing a third eye, Haley states he is from Venus and his fleet has intercepted the Martians' own, with Haley's plot for an invasion imminent.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Jack Elam as Avery.
  • Special Effect Failure: While Ross's third arm holds up relatively well, Haley's third eye is clearly fake: it's completely different from the shape of his own eyes, doesn't blink (it *does* roll back a little— a motion which is unfortunately concealed by Haley throwing his head back at that moment), and it's possible to make out the edges of the pasted-on circle that backs it. Amusingly, the actor who played Haley later said that despite all that, people would still come up to him in the street and say, "My God! Where's your third eye?"
