  • Fair for Its Day: Mézeray's black butler has some shades of Uncle Tomfoolery and gets called a nasty racial slur at some point, but is otherwise depicted as a sympathetic character who isn't afraid of standing up to his boss, calling out his supposed racism, and being quite the Servile Snarker.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Legrain's favorite way of dealing with troublemakers is to trap them in the old dungeon of his castle. Twelve years after the movie was shot, the dead body of a local criminal was actually found inside the dungeon of the Paluel Castle (which was used for the scenes taking place at Castle Montignac).
  • Memetic Mutation: In France, the dinner scene in which Mézeray and Legrain eat on the opposite sides of a long table has been humorously compared to how Russian president Vladimir Putin contemptuously received French president Emmanuel Macron in the latter's mediation attempt in the escalation that led to the invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, also using a long table. At least it was funny prior to the invasion, not so much after it started.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The movie was released in 1968 and is unambiguously set in the late '60s/early '70s. Legrain's affinity for stating exact years when talking about his past cements this, such as mentioning that he was born in 1895 (and he does indeed appear to be in his 70s during the events of the movie).
