YMMV / The Sudden Appearance of Hope

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • This 2016 book casually mentions Hope seeing in the news that Russian terrorists invaded Ukraine. Come the 2022 Russian-Ukranian war in real life, this becomes a bit harsher...
    • There's also a brief mention of terrorist attacks in Israel/Palestine—with a war starting there in real life on 7 October 2023, this becomes a bit darker.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Hope's parents forgetting her when she develops her condition at 16 years old, and Hope consequently having to leave her parents (and little sister), which is so painful for her that she briefly considers suicide. And thereafter, being all on her own, without friends, income or education...
    • Hope thinks she is the only person in the world with her condition—until she meets Parker, a man who has the same. They spend a wonderful day in New York together and she desparately writes down as much about him as she can, knowing she will forget him... And she does, immediately. Because of her own writings, she knows he exists and that she met him, but she doesn't remember anything about him. She constantly wonders about him.
      • Years later, when she is in deep trouble with Prometheus, she contacts Parker (she still had his e-mail) in desperate need for help—only for him to reply with a very short "I don't want anything to do with this and please never contact me again". She is all on her own, and abandoned by the only one she thought could be her friend.
