YMMV / The Sleeping Beauty Killer

Go To

  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: During Alex and Laurie's argument, both sides are intended to make good points and for the most part they do. However, while Alex's hurt and frustration at Laurie for not trusting him regarding the Sleeping Beauty case and for essentially leading him on for two years is understandable, he crosses a line when he tells Laurie that six years is enough time for her to have moved on from her dead husband. Laurie points out that she spent five of those six years unable to properly grieve for Greg because of the way he died: Greg was murdered in front of their son and the crime went unsolved until last year, plus Laurie spent five years fearing the killer would come for her and her son next (and he nearly succeeded in killing them). Laurie isn't just dealing with grief, but also serious trauma, neither of which are something you can just 'get over' in a few years. Considering that Alex knows all of this, his comment comes off as selfish and insensitive. He even acknowledges that it "sounds cold", but he still says it anyway, and it's hard to argue his romantic frustration justifies or excuses it.
  • The Woobie: Casey Carter, following the revelation that she's innocent of killing Hunter Raleigh. Fifteen years ago she was mostly happily engaged to the love of her life, trying not to let her jealousy of other women and the gossip about her being a gold-digger ruin things. Then she was drugged at a gala with Rohypnol, passed out on the couch and woke up to find someone had shot her fiance dead. The police then arrested her for killing Hunter, with no one believing her claims she was drugged and set-up, and her being portrayed as a total psycho, with all her flaws and mistakes being scrutinised and blown out-of-proportion to make her look worse. She escaped a murder conviction by the skin of her teeth, but still got fifteen years for manslaughter. Not even her own parents believe she's innocent, with her father going to his grave thinking his daughter is a killer. Then Casey learns that her beloved cousin Angela, who is the only person who has always stood by her, is actually the one who killed her fiance and framed her out of extreme jealousy.
