- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
- Nearly every work referenced in the opening sequence could have been parodied in a full Treehouse of Horror short. The writers may have been of the same opinion, because at least Cthulhu and H. P. Lovecraft's mythos came back in full force on Bongo Comics' Treehouse of Horror XIX and the show's own Treehouse of Horror XXIX.
- Just imagine if they had used the secured Del Toro for a whole Treehouse episode spoofing Del Toro movies (like Mimic, Blade, Hellboy, The Devil's Backbone...) instead of just the title sequence. At least Treehouse of Horror XXX would later spoof The Shape of Water.
- Pan's Labyrinth alone could have been the subject of a Whole-Plot Reference episode, given its similar structure to a Simpsons vignette episode (with the Toad, Pale Man, and Captain being the enemy in one segment each, and the Faun acting as framing device). Though admitedly, it would be hard to adapt the obscure politics and goriest elements of the film into the show.
