• Harsher in Hindsight: This episode reveals Mr. Burns has known Smithers since he was a baby, and acted as a surrogate father figure to him after Waylon Smithers Sr. sacrificed his life to stop the power plant from going through a meltdown. As a result, this now makes Smithers' unsubtle infatuation with his boss, which became more unambiguous in later episodes, even more disturbing to the point of bordering the line of incestuous.
• Heartwarming Moments:
  • When the Simpsons and Chief Wiggum are walking through Mr. Burns' corpse tunnel, Lisa is scared and clinging to Homer's hand. Bart is also bringing up the rear, most likely because Lisa was so afraid.
  • Once Mr. Burns realises that Waylon Smithers Sr. is dying, he lowers the baby Waylon Smithers Jr. away from the window so he can't see what's happening.
• Nightmare Fuel: The horrific depiction of Waylon Smithers Sr.'s decayed corpse, which is shockingly graphic even by this show's usual standards. No wonder Homer was traumatized by it.
