• Harsher in Hindsight: One character in the book is a trans woman, with Strike threatening to reveal this fact and making an implied threat about Prison Rape. This has come under fire recently, given Rowling's controversial statements about the trans community in general.
• Memetic Mutation: The "Halal takeaway" discussion gained some traction for not exactly being JK's best writing.
• Overshadowed by Controversy: These days, the aforementioned trans character, and her rather unsympathetic portrayal, are pretty much the only things people know about this book.
• Sophomore Slump: This books is widely considered to be the weakest in the series for its somewhat mean-spiritedness, predictable plot and killer, and its narrow focus on the British writing community that is impenetrable to anyone not familiar with it.
