YMMV / The Night Before

Go To

  • Character Shilling: Despite her being a famously divisive figure in real life, every single character in this movie absolutely loves Miley Cyrus and is very quick to say so.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The subplot where Isaac gets unsolicited dick picks from a guy played by James Franco feels downright tasteless considering that's happened in real life.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Ethan's flashback to the first Christmas Eve he spent with Isaac and Chris, after his parents died. Knowing Ethan had nothing to do except pack up his parent's stuff, Isaac and Chris showed up and took him out on the town. Did they do it to party? Yes. Did they do it because they wouldn't let their best friend be alone with his grief? Also yes.
      "We're your family now."
    • It's revealed late in the movie that Chris has been doing steroids to get ahead as an athlete and get fame. Near the end of the film, when all the plotlines are wrapping up, we see him talking to his mother, who he had said kept parading him around in pride and had even petitioned to get a park named after him, having come clean about the steroids. She takes it very well and lets him know she's proud of him for telling the truth in her own understated way.
Mrs. Roberts: Can't have been easy to tell me that. Won't be easy to tell the world either.
Chris: Guess we won't be getting that park.
Mrs. Roberts: Fuck the park, it's got crackheads. Say grace, boy.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Tracy Morgan is the narrator and Santa Claus.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Jason Mantzoukas is one of the drunk Santas that beats up Ethan.
  • The Woobie: Ethan. His parents died in his late teens, he's still reeling from a breakup and his to best friends have moved on with their lives while he's stuck doing dead-end jobs. This is someone who is truly alone on Christmas.
