YMMV / The New Edition Story

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Plenty of the performances in both films, but especially "Can You Stand The Rain", which renewed interest in the song.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Bryshere "Yazz" Gray's performance as Michael Bivins was considered one of biggest standouts of the film to the point of becoming the de facto leader of the group (and the film).
  • Minority Show Ghetto: Zigzagged. While The New Edition Story managed to avert this trope, it gets more complicated in regards to The Bobby Brown Story due to how divisive the man is in real-life. Even defenders of the film will agree that while it's still enjoyable, it still had a difficult task of following the dynamo that was the former production.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The disastrous fight between band members at the 1997 show that culminated in a shot being fired (and narrowly missing Mike) and Brooke suffering a heart attack due to all of the stress of it.
    • Ricky's overdose, complete with blood coming from both his nose and mouth.
    • Bobby's soon-to-be brother-in-law being gunned down in a drive-by-shooting right in front of him. This is only seconds after the man gave him a gun.
    • The brutal death of Bobby's childhood friend who was stabbed in a street fight. Even years later, he is still haunted by the event.
    • Bobby's drug-related stroke, which left him unconscious. Even worse was Whitney's reaction to it (although in her defense, she was also pretty high.)
    • Another scene had Bobby, whilst high on drugs, becoming paranoid during the ill-fated New Edition reunion tour, jumping off the bus and approaching the isolated house of a man who was heavily implied to be a racist and who brandished a shotgun on him. Even as the other group members tried to appeal to him to apologize for Bobby's actions and leave his property, he didn't even lower his gun until he recognized Whitney who then successfully defused the situation.
  • Win Back the Crowd: For both BET and television movie biopics. note  Furthermore, The New Edition Story premiered around the same time as Lifetime's Britney Ever After...and guess which one was given all of the higher ratings and positive reviews.
