YMMV / The Legend of Su-Ling

• Jerkass Woobie: The Emperor spends most of the movie on a personal quest to find something beautiful that will make him happy. He forces his subjects to surrender their most valuable belongings, kidnaps people and nearly forced a young woman into marriage. However, it's apparently justified since he's mourning his wife's death and is trying to fill the void left behind. Also, it's clear that he really does love/care about his son and just wants him to be happy (the Emperor's just doesn't seem to know how to really show it).
• Strangled by the Red String: Chen and Su-Ling spend very little time establishing any real chemistry with each other. Literally all that happens between them is a misunderstanding when Chen tries to make up for losing the net full of fish and then they suddenly sing a romantic song together.
