• Awesome Music: John Barry's moody, jazzy score.
• Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Michael Caine spying on his neighbours brings to mind Michael Paine the nosey neighbour from Harry Enfield and Chums.
  • Gordon Jackson working for a government agency involving spies.
• Hollywood Homely: Harry Palmer is supposed to be an inversion of the James Bond-style spy - instead of suave and gorgeous, he's supposed to be a funny-looking Cockney who seduces women by cooking for them. Unfortunately, he isn't unattractive - he's Michael Caine, in glasses. He even loses his glasses for the second half of the movie.
• Unintentional Period Piece:
  • At the start of the movie, the station announcer at Marylebone says that the train is leaving for Nottingham and Leicester, which means that it would have had to travel along the former "Great Central" route towards Sheffield. This line, one of the most modern main lines in the country, was closed the following year (1966), and most of the trackbed has since been built over or erased completely from the map.
  • The supermarket in which Harry is seen shopping is Safeway, which has since been bought by the Morrisons supermarket chain.
