YMMV / The Great Train Robbery

Tropes for the silent film:

  • Adaptation Displacement: It is based on a stage play, which is no longer performed and was never filmed in its original form. Therefore, most present day people who've seen it don't know that it's an adaptation.
  • Older Than They Think: Despite its reputation, it isn't the first filmed Western — IMDb has entries for at least three earlier examples.
  • Special Effects Failure: For modem viewers it's very obvious that the guy thrown off the train is actually a dummy. At the time, however, special effects like this were novel and convincing. Even now it qualifies for a Grandfather Clause.
