- Nightmare Fuel: The ending of the story in all versions, but particularly Dirk Zimmer's illustration on the last page of Alvin Schwartz's retelling◊ in the original 1984 edition of In a Dark, Dark Room. The image of Jenny's headless corpse lying in bed, with her bony old hand hanging limply from the bedside, her pallid head on the floor, and a black cat looking solemnly on, has haunted the memories of many children who grew up with it.
- Nightmare Retardant: In slightly disappointing contrast to the above, Victor Rivas's drawing of the ending in the 2017 re-illustrated edition of In a Dark, Dark Room is Played for Laughs, with Jenny's head still appearing alive and sporting a humorously dazed expression, with her husband Alfred looking cartoonishly terrified, and with the doctor running away in the background.
