- Aluminum Christmas Trees: As silly as it may sound, rear view mirrors were a standard feature on fighter aircraft in World War II (and still are today), for the simple and obvious benefit that they provided. Mirrors mounted outside of the canopy were generally replaced by mirrors inside of it as the war went on.
