YMMV / The Fun They Had

Go To

  • Misaimed Fandom: Isaac Asimov hated school; the classes were paced for students that were less able than he was, and he never got along with his teachers (or any other authority figure he was ever placed under, for that matter). Asimov intended the educational system in this story to be clearly better than 1950s schooling: the robotic teachers give lessons customized to each individual student, so students don't get frustrated with lessons that are too hard or too easy. However, many people with different memories of school failed to see the intended irony in the story's last sentence, and it even ended up being anthologized in many literature textbooks for students.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Many people do point to socialization as a significant benefit of today's schools that homeschooling has more trouble providing. Asimov's artificial teachers are better at educating, but maybe Margie really is on to something after all?
