• Complete Monster: The Other commander possessing Colonel Alexander Vosch lacks his potential love for his family of his book counterpart, becoming a completely monstrous mass murderer. "Vosch" attacks Earth, raising oceanic tides and weaponizing the avian flu, to kill the bulk of humanity. Murdering the adults of a refugee camp, Vosch turns children into brainwashed soldiers, convincing them other humans are aliens, to wipe out the survivors as the titular "Fifth Wave". Fleeing Earth when his base is destroyed, Vosch takes his Child Soldiers with him, hoping to return to complete his genocide.
• Critical Dissonance: The film has received largely negative reviews from critics, who claim that it's derivative of other YA dystopian works, but it has received more positive reception from audiences (B- on CinemaScore, on a scale of A+ to F) and a number of 5 star reviews on iTunes.
• Heartwarming Moments: Cassie reuniting with Sam at the end of the film is adorable, especially how they keep hugging.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Before playing Cassie, Chloe Grace Moretz played the star of a parody apocalyptic YA franchise in Clouds of Sils Maria.
• Nightmare Fuel: The entire Third Wave. It's an ebola-like disease that is spread by birds. The first two waves, being an EMP and a flood, mainly served to knock out the infrastructure ahead of the Third Wave; this is what kills most of the population. Cassie and others are terrified of birds after the Third Wave, and the audience is likely to be as well.
