• One-Scene Wonder: Albert Finney as Fouche, giving a marvelous performance as a sardonic politician well aware that he survived only by trading one boss for the other at the right moment.
• Retroactive Recognition:
  • Pete Postlethwaite (still credited as "Peter") makes his film debut in the small role of a man shaving General Treillard.
  • The fortune teller is played by Liz Smith, who would later be best known for playing Mrs. Cropley in The Vicar of Dibley and Nana in The Royle Family.
• Spiritual Successor: To Barry Lyndon. Scott stated on the DVD commentary that he deliberately set out to mimic that film's lush cinematography. Gay Hamilton is in both films.
