- Early-Installment Weirdness: In the first book in the series, scene transitions just sort of happen like in most other novels. In the second and third books, any scene transition is effectively a meta joke where whatever new scene is cut to, either a character or the narrator will be talking about something related to the last line of the previous scene.
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Asherzu is meant to be correct that joining the Red Horde is a terrible idea that will only get more Shadowkin slaughtered. However, they just had their home destroyed and their people slaughtered for no other reason than Fantastic Racism. A lot of readers questioned why going back to the peaceful way that has already been rejected by humans is the "correct" decision.
