- Memetic Mutation: "is that" "Vladmir Putin?"
- Questionable Casting: The film has faced backlash for its decision to cast a cisgender man to play a transgender woman instead of casting an actual transgender woman as Lili, as transgender actors are regularly denied opportunities, even when it comes to playing transgender characters. Even Eddie Redmayne (who originally defended the decision during the film's release) changed his mind a few years later and sided with casting an actual trans actor, even claiming that him accepting the role was a mistake.
- Tearjerker:
- When Gerda comes home from an exhibit, only to be greeted by Lili. She tearfully begs her, "I need my husband!"
- After painful radiation therapy in an effort to quell her desires, Lili whimpers, "You hurt Lili."
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Some reviews have noted that the film's time in Development Hell seems to have done a lot of damage, as the final product feels like it's been micromanaged to within an inch of its life to remove anything remotely challenging or controversial from a story that would naturally call for both.
