YMMV / The Creature Walks Among Us

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: A common fan idea is that the "creature" of the title is actually Dr. Barton, as a seemingly innocuous man of science who walks amongst everyone else; but is actually inhumanly cruel, abusive, controlling thug, and is very much the villain of the film. The Gill Man by comparison doesn't kill anyone innocent in the film and only ever attacked because he was attacked, it's made clear it would never fit into human society, and is even given heroic moments such as saving Marcia from being accosted by Grant and killing Barton later.
  • Nightmare Retardant: As Gill Man loses its fish eyes and is given clothes, it becomes just another lumbering Frankenstein's Monster knock-off.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Though not as well regarded as the first film, it does have slightly better reviews than Revenge and is remarked as having much more memorable characters.
  • Values Resonance: Dr. Barton is an ambitious scientist who is portrayed as a reprehensible human being for his cruel experimentation on the Gill man, emotional and physical abuse to his wife, and general malice towards his colleagues that far outweighs any positive contributions he makes. Rare for the 1950s, yet it holds up excellently today.
    • To a lesser degree, Jed Grant's persistent lusting after Marcia and doggedly trying to get physically intimate with her despite her insistence he stop is also portrayed as vile and unsavory; well ahead of its time when resisting love interests were often portrayed as "just playing hard to get" back then.
