YMMV / The Crazies (1973)

Go To

  • Awesome Music: "Heaven Help Us", sung by Beverly Bremers, plays during the end credits when Colonel Peckem rides a helicopter to Louisville, underlining the tragedy of the entire situation.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the ending, Colonel Peckem gets reports that there is a virus outbreak in Louisville, the same setting in which The Return of the Living Dead takes place. Coincidentally, the zombies in both movies are created by secret military weapons, and The Return of the Living Dead also has the military using nuclear weapons to wipe out the zombies.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Unlike most other Technically Living Zombies, the Crazies are physically indistinguishable from regular people and can even put on a veneer of normalcy since most of them don't even know they are infected.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: This is a surprisingly accurate snapshot of the general mood of America in 1973. The Trixie outbreak would be a dire situation under any circumstances, but it's made worse by the sheer incompetence of the majority of the military officials who are attempting to confront it. Anger over the Vietnam War, and the idiots trying to fight it, permeates the whole movie. It's especially telling if you've been watching anything made in Reagan's '80s, where the military is suddenly incredibly cool, churns out badasses like an assembly line, and never screws up.
