• Fan-Preferred Couple: The fandom seems to have really latched on to the pairing of Max and Louise, particularly given Alan's characterization early in the series.
• Fridge Horror: The recordings of the last moments of Apollo 1.
• Moral Event Horizon: Donn Eisele crosses it by abandoning his wife and dying son, then deciding to marry his mistress after the son dies.
• Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Alan started out very unlikeable and arrogant, a distant husband and careless womanizer and cheater. Once he finds out he can't go back into space, he starts to get a lot nicer and more sympathetic.
• Tearjerker: We get seven episodes to know and love Gus Grissom before the Apollo 1 disaster. The following episode starts with the crew's funeral, scored with an especially heartbreaking cover of "The Times They Are A-Changin."
