• Ass Pull: Sam is dealt a fatal injury, after it's been established that the next time he or Dean die, it's for good. How is this resolved? Simple: he just isn't dead. No twist, no supernatural trickery, he just didn't die somehow.
• Ho Yay: Sam and Dean are, again, paralleled to a couple, with Sam and Michelle being hurt and Dean and Corbyn stopping at nothing to make sure their loved one is safe. The dialogue furthermore draws explicit parallels between Dean and Corbyn as Corbin insists he can't lose Michelle and Billie sees through Dean's bluff and tells him he can't lose Sam. Moreover, the episode is a Whole-Plot Reference to Romeo and Juliet, with Dean thinking Sam is dead and subsequently committing suicide. Also, at the end of the episode Michelle gives a heartbreaking speech about how she just watched the man she loved die, and there's no going back to normal from that. The camera then has a lingering zoom on Dean's face as he considers her words, thinking about Sam, whom he has nearly lost.
