YMMV / Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Lucy Lane was introduced as Jimmy's Tsundere love interest, something like the relationship her elder sister had with Superman. However, some fans view her as crossing the line into simply mean-spirited, with some even saying that her behavior goes into the abusive range. note
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #5 contains the story "The Boy Olympics". Finding out that the Planet's rival paper, the Sentinel, is on the verge of closing, Jimmy organizes the titular event to keep the Sentinel newsboys from becoming unemployed, even when Superman reminds him that it will mean his own job if he's caught. Perry White gets his own CMOH when we discover that he was also trying to help the Sentinel and was the Anonymous Benefactor who provided money for the Olympics advertising.
Perry White: Healthy competition is the lifeblood of America, and brotherhood is its heart.
    • In issue #17, Jimmy believes he is dying of radiation poisoning. When Superman, who has figured out the same thing, becomes upset over being unable to save him, Jimmy instantly forgets about his impending death in an effort to comfort him.note
  • Older Than They Think:
    • The iconic Giant Turtle Man Jimmy cover that's been homaged many times is actually an homage itself to this.
    • In Supergirl (2015) Kara and Jimmy have a short-lived romance. Some fans have shipped the two since the late fifties, and they married in elseworlds story Superman's Pal #57.
    • Superman Family and Action Comics played up Jimmy's status as an Intrepid Reporter who didn't need Superman. While perhaps not to the same degree, the early Jimmy Olsen comics had a lot more moments where Jimmy's wits and fists would get a head start on the problem before Superman arrived.
